Ham, Cheese and Salami Roll-ups

One of the parenting goals I have for my children is to mold them into at least proficient cooks by the time they leave the house.  We all knew those guys in college that had absolutely no housekeeping skills and could barely boil water to make pasta.  (Believe me guys, housekeeping skills and culinary skills are attractive to women, slovenliness, not so much.)  My five year old is getting to the point where he can handle actual cooking now, as opposed to just stirring, and so my quest this summer is to find some recipes that he can make himself.  I scored big for the mom team in finding this recipe.  It was easy enough that he could do all of the steps by himself while I stood close by to just give directions and put the pan into the oven.  He was so proud of himself and ate a double helping of his meal.  He even wanted to make dinner the next night!  Now I must find some more kid friendly recipes to harness this energy!

Ham, Cheese and Salami Roll-ups adapted from Taste of Home Simple and Delicious March/April 2009

Serves 4-5

Ingredients:

2 Tbls. olive oil
5-6 eight inch flour tortillas
1/2 c. grated parmesan cheese
5-6 slices deli ham
5-6 slices provolone cheese
24 slices thinly sliced deli salami
1/2 c. roasted red sweet peppers, drained
1 c. shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees F.
1.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2.  Lay out tortillas on baking sheet, brush lightly with olive oil.
3.  Sprinkle each tortilla with parmesan cheese
4.  Layer a ham slice on each tortilla, then in order, the provolone, the salami, the red peppers and the mozzarella.
5.  Roll up each tortilla and place a toothpick through them to secure.  Place them seam side down on the baking sheet.
6.  Brush with olive oil.
7.  Bake for 12-15 minutes until browned and cheese is melted through.

Roll ups are awesome for kids. My daughter loves the roll ups I have made. I'm very adventurous in the kitchen and like to make things. Luckily my husband will eat just about anything.

That is excellent! I think one of the best things my mother ever did for me was teach me how to cook and bake. Go you, and go five-year-old son!

Good for you - one of the most important things to learn.

One of the things my mum taught me to make when I was 3 was risotto - easy style with long grain rice, onions, mushrooms, peppers and tinned tomato soup. Tasty. And I liked it so much I taught my grandmother how to make it - had to stand on a stool to reach the stove. I mastered chilli con carne quite young too. Liked cooking biscuits and cakes a lot too - can't imagine why..... You could try bread too - you can make plenty of mess with that, what could be better?

That's so great that your son is getting the hang of the kitchen. I love it when parents and kids cook together. It's a gret way to bond as well as learn skill they'll use when get older.

I don't have kids yet, myself, but I bought a book for a friend who loves to cook--Disney's Kid's Cookbook. Everything is super easy and somewhat healthy. She and her daughter have loved cooking from it.

Good job - more moms should have that attitude re: raising boys. That and teaching them to iron!

Amanda this is great! I agree they must learn to cook and clean. My 12 year old cooked dinner tonight but now I need to go in the kitchen to see if he cleaned up! Great recipe too!

You have definitely got a chick magnet on your hands. He is going to be a big hit when he gets older. A man that can cook...you are an awesome mom for instilling such a great skill.

I am saving this one for when my older sous chef is ready!

From what I have seen you are doing a great job of that! My mother would not let me help, but I watched, and learned...the baking part is not as good as hers, but hey I am not starving, lol

Salami, ham and cheese would be a good late night snack, but not on my eating plan :)

You are doing such a great job! Instilling this love of cooking in them at such an age helps them to see it not as a chore but wonderfully creative part of the day! I wouldn't mind a double serving of these roll-ups myself!

Teaching kids to cook is important (and fun). Being able to cook is what makes my girlfriend put up with me. ;)

You should get a copy of "Alpha-Bakery" from Gold Medal flour. It's pretty good.

Great job! That's one of my goals with our future children. Teaching kids to make their own healthy food is my favorite part of babysitting.

Cute! Do you have the Mollie Katzen books for cooking with kids? "Pretend Soup" is one of them - they are all healthy and really easy things.
