Camping food - Grilled steaks and asparagus

I get asked questions all of the time about how to cook well while one is camping. It seems like most folks out there go the hot dog, potato chip and marshmallow route while camping. Don't get me wrong, we love those traditional camping foods too, but I just wanted to show how easy it is to go a little bit more upscale. With asparagus being in season now, it is easy to wash them, snap off the ends and place them in a plastic baggie with some olive oil and salt before you leave home. Seal up the baggie and place it in your cooler. Do the same for your meat by placing it in a plastic baggie with your favorite marinade. I double bag any meat products to ensure against leakage in my cooler, but it is super simple to do this marinating step at home for wonderful camping food. When you are ready to cook your food at your campsite, get your charcoal going ahead of time, then just take your food out of the baggies and put it right on the grill. Now doesn't this look better than hot dogs and potato chips?

  1. Steak and asparagus. Perfect camping food. A nice change from the usual hotdog.I haven't been camping a long time, but I'll have to remember to bring along some steaks for the meals.

  3. I adore camping and the food depends on how comfortable is the place.

Here the tradition is to grill beef with chimichurri sauce.

Also potatoes wrapped with aluminium foil (put directly on the ground inside the fire for a moment), later with butter.

Enjoy your summer…here I’m in winter..a little difficult to outdoor activities.

    Cheers!

  6. Yes. Yes it does look better than hot dogs. My parents would go all out when we would go camping, sometimes my mom would have three pots on the fire. Good times. :)

  10. Because we camp so much, one of my big goals for the summer was to be a healthier camper. I've tried grilling turkey/blue cheese burgers, polenta, portobella mushrooms....so much better than hot dogs! I didn't do so hot this weekend (see my blog-ugh), but I think I'll have to try your ideas next time! Thank you!

  13. I was up in the Tri-Cities a couple of weeks ago. I thought about letting you know before I went up, but time just got away from me... my dad had been in the hospital and I needed to check on some things up there. Next time I will let you know.
Oh... I ate at "Stone Soup" in Richland. Have you ever eaten there? A nice little soup and sandwich shop.
Your steaks and asparagus are a perfect camping food. You had three.. in different sizes. It reminded me of the 3 bears, big, small and smallest.
Where do you camp up there?

  14. I love the idea of packing up food before you leave for a trip. I think that is typically where people get into trouble because they don't plan meals ahead and end up going for convenience type things. Looks fantastic!

  15. I love hot dogs and chips but this would be fine dining al fresco at its best! Just a little bit of effort will yield a delicious and so much more healthy meal than weiners and chips!

  16. Looking good. When we used a grill with coals, we also used a chimney/fire starter - not sure how it's called - to help get the fire going faster. it was very helpful.
I love grilling! Camping... eh, not so much :)

  21. That looks great. I'm not a big fan of typical camping food - and I'm allergic to most of it - but steak and asparagus is definitely something I could and would it. I hope you have/had fun camping.
